Tom Hardy did an amazing job, but he's not Max. In the original idea for the film, this would be Max's last hurrah. A broken, deaheveled man. Not unliked Gibson himself. However, they changed it because they felt that not enough young people knew who Gibson was, and those who did know knew him as a anti-semitic crazy person.

I love the original Mad Max trilogy, even thunderdome (I think it has great moments, but it fails as a whole). But Fury Road is so so good that I didn´t care so much about Mel Gibson being out of it.
